SSL Certificates

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. That's as geeky as we'll get for now. The purpose of SSL is to encrypt data from the web site visitor's web browser to the server where the SSL certificate is installed. When you think about how you use the internet, it's very likely that you would not buy from an online retailer that did not encrypt your personal details such as address and credit/debit card number. There are two more additional benefits to using SSL:

  • When you visit a site that has a valid, signed SSL certificate, the company web site that you are visiting does in fact belong to that company. This prevents somebody from setting up a web site and claiming to be from a company and accept payments from visitors; and
  • SSL is secure. Having this extra level of security on your web site gives confidence to potential buyers that any personal details they provide will be encrypted and transmitted securely. Most web surfers now understand that their details are safe when they see the gold padlock on their web browser.

We offer two different SSL certificates, which serve slightly different purposes. The RapidSSL certificate is most suitable for allowing secure logins to your web site, or for securing contact forms or light e-commerce. The QuickSSL certificate is more suitable for online retailers. When you order either of these SSL certificates from Xengo, we will assign you a unique IP address that will only be used by your web site.
